Amy W. Schulman is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Pfizer Inc. and Business Unit Lead for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. Effective January 1, 2014, Ms. Schulman will become Group President, Vaccines, Oncology and Consumer Healthcare, one of Pfizer's three operating units
Ms. Schulman joined Pfizer as General Counsel in June 2008 and saw the company through its $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth, the largest pharmaceutical acquisition in history. In early 2009 she spearheaded the Pfizer Legal Alliance (PLA), an innovative approach to engaging outside counsel and transforming the billable hour. In a December 2009 cover story, The American Lawyer wrote: “Amy Schulman knows how the game is played and has set out to change all the rules.” Ms. Schulman and the PLA have been featured in publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times and The New York Times.
In 2012 Ms. Schulman’s role expanded to include Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. She leads this global business, which includes well known brands such as Advil, Centrum and Chapstick. Ms. Schulman assumed this role after serving as President and General Manager of Pfizer’s $2.1 billion infant formula and nutrition business. As the head of Pfizer Nutrition, Ms. Schulman drove increased profitability and above-market performance. In 2012 Ms. Schulman was instrumental in the sale of Pfizer Nutrition to Néstlé for $11.85 billion.
Before joining Pfizer, Ms. Schulman was a partner at DLA Piper, where she was a member of the Board and Executive Policy Committees, and built and led the international law firm’s mass tort and class-action practice.
Ms. Schulman’s business acumen, commitment to clients, skill as a legal advocate and efforts to advance women have earned her accolades from leading publications and organizations. In 2013 Fortune magazine named her one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business.” That same year, The American Lawyer named her one of the “Top 50 Innovators,” and The National Law Journal named her one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America.” The American Bar Association honored her with the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement award in 2012. In 2009 Forbes magazine included her on its list of “The World’s Most Powerful Women.” She has served as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and Yale Law School and has been a guest lecturer at Harvard Business School and Tsinghua University in Beijing, among others.
Ms. Schulman also is the executive sponsor of Pfizer’s Global Women’s Council, which has helped increase the number of women in senior-level jobs throughout the company. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wesleyan University, Ms. Schulman earned her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1989. She serves on the Board of Directors of The Brookings Institution and Wesleyan University.
