Day at the Museum Has Underprivileged Children Island-Hopping
Every Wednesday throughout the summer, a program hosted by Pfizer turns Puerto Rico's Museum of Art in San Juan into the backdrop for an afternoon of learning about a particular Caribbean island for hundreds of underprivileged children.
Participants in the 2011 Summer Afternoon program, "Traveling Through the Antilles," take part in storytelling sessions and creative art, music and drama workshops led by local artists and actors.
The program, which started with only 17 participants in 2004 and has grown to 250, highlights the culture, traditions, art and history of a chosen Caribbean island. The initiative also provides free access to the museum for underprivileged communities and is designed to promote cultural values and stronger family bonds.
Pfizer has been an active supporter of the museum since it opened a decade ago and has participated in a number of its educational programs for children.
