Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company: The World's Largest Pharmaceutical Company

R&D Locations: Groton/New London

Pfizer’s world-class research and development centers in Groton and New London make Connecticut the headquarters of Pfizer Global Research & Development and a major hub of drug discovery, metabolism and development as well as animal health and drug safety evaluation.

Groton/New London is where many of the discoveries and innovations that drive the Pfizer pipeline to new potentials are made. A research and development distribution center of sorts, Groton/New London sends out vital information, tools, technologies, and compounds to scientists and researchers at every level of drug discovery and development across every Therapeutic Area. The discoveries made at Groton/New London provide research teams throughout Pfizer Global R&D with many of the key insights, data, drug targets, and compounds they need to find and develop effective new treatments to improve the health and wellness of people around the world.

More than 4,000 Pfizer colleagues, including highly skilled research scientists, technicians, and clinicians employ the most advanced robotics, technology and data software such as:

Molecular Profiling

Our Molecular Profiling Group brings together researchers and scientists from areas including Transcriptomics, Proteomics, Metabonomics, and Genomics to provide a complete technology interface designed to discover more precise therapies through the comprehensive analysis of compounds. This group collaborates with scientists and researchers at every level of drug discovery and development to build on the exciting opportunities made possible by the mapping of the human genome.

Discovery High Throughput Screening and ADME screening

Through Discovery High Throughput Screening, scientists at our Groton site work in close collaboration with Therapeutic Area teams to deliver a multiple of target compounds and quality hit series that drive Pfizer’s global pipeline. And, through HTS ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) screening, technicians run screens and post critical data up to the global database for all research teams to view.

Liquids Materials Management

Groton houses an expansive store of compounds and is one of two global production facilities responsible for accepting, processing, and delivering compound orders throughout Pfizer. Through a complex, streamlined operation of highly skill technicians, fully automated robotic systems and databases, Pfizer is able to handle a huge amount of orders with the precision and timeliness needed to facilitate ongoing drug discovery and development.

Our Groton/New London facilities also ensure availability of high quality reagent antibodies to support research in the drug discovery process and in the clinic and provide global support to Therapeutic Areas pursuing antibody and protein therapeutics with specialized molecular biology, expression, purification, and characterization technologies. Further, the staff works to formulate dosages of oral, injectable, inhalable, topical and sprayable products, perform solubility and stability studies, and streamline operations among vendors, suppliers, and other groups throughout Pfizer to allow for optimal discovery.
