Pfizer Worldwide EHS Programs and Performance
As our company continues to evolve to meet the needs of our changing world, Pfizer is committed to turning environment health safety (EHS) challenges into opportunities to improve performance. Recognizing that well-defined performance expectations drive continuous improvement, we employ EHS performance targets throughout every level of our organization. Twenty four distinct, yet interrelated Guidelines — many of which exceed host country regulatory requirements — set uniform standards of performance for offices, research and development, manufacturing and logistics operations worldwide.
At the same time, we recognize that local needs may not always be the same. With this in mind, each Pfizer operation is required to develop goals and targets specifics to their local activities and stakeholders. At all times and at all locations, full compliance with all applicable EHS legal requirements is the baseline expectation.
Measuring and Monitoring EHS Performance
Key to our efforts to continually improve our EHS performance is the careful measuring and monitoring of our progress. We do this through a combination of data collection and verification, internal auditing, facility self-assessment and management system reviews. By thoroughly tracking our performance, we are able to spotlight our successes in eliminating or reducing our EHS impacts, quickly and responsibly handle any EHS issues, and identify key areas where we need to focus on improving our performance in the future.
Pfizer Worldwide EHS Goals
To date, we have established 5 worldwide goals:
- Climate Change — To reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 35% per $ million of sales by 2007 from the baseline year 2000.
- Energy — To meet 35% of our global electricity needs by 2010 through "clean" energy sources (e.g., co-generation, solar or wind power)
- Ozone Depleting Compounds (ODCs) — To phase out the use of Class 1 ODCs in large heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and industrial process equipment by:
- December 31, 2005 at Pfizer facilities owned prior to April 2003
- December 31, 2007 at Pfizer facilities acquired after April 2003
- Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) — To reduce our ODP from ODC releases by the end of 2007 by 80% from our 2002 baseline
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) — To reduce our releases of VOCs by 40 percent on an absolute basis from the baseline year of 2002 by the end of 2008.
In addition, key EHS program areas addressed through quantifiable targets and action plans within Pfizer’s individual business units and facilities include emission and waste reduction, incident prevention, EHS management system improvement, and certification and community outreach.
To reduce the dramatic impact of greenhouse gases (GHG) on the global climate, Pfizer is not waiting for mandatory programs and is acting now to reduce its emissions.
Achieving and maintaining high environmental, health, and safety performance are fundamental to our programs. Being recognized publicly for those efforts supports that commitment to performance.
