Hy Snell was born in the Bronx 94 years ago. He discovered a passion for art during his days in the Army and taught himself to paint and sculpt over the course of his life. Ten years ago, at the age of 84, Hy began rapidly losing his eyesight. Determined to continue on with his work (“What else would I do with myself?” he says), he moved forward despite his limitations and turned to a more abstract style reflective of his new view of the world. Hy is barely able to make out shapes and responds mostly to colors, but sees life as an ongoing experiment -- just like his art.
