Food Drive Supports Local Hunger Relief Organization

Pfizer’s Pearl River, NY site demonstrated its commitment to help their local community with a successful food drive.

Pfizer colleagues in Pearl River donated 1,328 pounds of non-perishable food items to the People to People food pantry in Nanuet recently. The donation will help People to People provide meals to struggling households in Rockland County, NY.

The spring food drive, one of two held annually by Pfizer Vaccine Research & Development and Oncology Research Unit-East exceeded donations from prior years.

“Early spring is a great time to help People to People’s food pantry replenish their shelves after the holidays,” said Jennifer Tejeda of Pfizer Vaccine R&D, who organized the drive. “The demand for food for Rockland County families in need continues to grow.  Our efforts at the Pearl River site to assist People to People in this worthy cause help to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people. It’s so wonderful to see our colleagues’ generosity and support being shared with our local community!”

“The folks at Pfizer have been incredible supporters of People to People for many years,” said Diane Serratore, Executive Director of People to People, which served an average of 1,545 Rockland households per month during 2016, a 10 percent increase over 2015. People to People also provides weekly food packages to nearly 200 children in afterschool programs at the Nyack Center and the Haverstraw Center.

“In 2016, the number of children receiving food assistance from People to People was higher than the number of adults for the first time, and the number of seniors who benefited from monthly food assistance increased over 20 percent,” Serratore said.  “These numbers emphasize the significant and persistent demand on People to People’s food pantry.”

Last year, the food bank distributed over $1.7 million worth of food. In addition, People to People is able to utilize its financial resources more wisely in purchasing meat, poultry, dairy and fresh produce to provide to our neighbors in need, according to Serratore. In addition, she said People to People is able to provide significantly more than the nine meals per week suggested by the Regional Food Bank.

In addition to two annual food drives, Pfizer colleagues in Pearl River help People to People make a meaningful difference in the lives of Rockland County neighbors by donating school supplies, toys and other gifts, and winter coats each year.

“People to People helps families in Rockland County in so many ways,” said John Sorrentino, Pfizer Vaccine R&D’s Pearl River-based Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.  “As members of this community, Pfizer Pearl River looks forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with this remarkable organization.”

The Pfizer site on North Middletown Road in Pearl River is one of company’s primary research centers and a production site for antibody-drug conjugates. Pfizer employs over 600 people in Pearl River.
