Sam Gwer is the Executive Director of Afya Research Africa, which operates a network of clinics in Kenya – Ubuntu-Afya Kiosks – that aim to improve primary care in underserved, rural areas. They currently have 11 clinics in farming and fishing communities, serving 15,000 people.
“We have really empowered communities, and they can see value and the need to participate,” Sam explains. “This is empowering because then with this intervention, we’re able to make an impact on health and wealth.”
Afya Research Africa is using its Global Health Innovation Grant to build four additional clinics in Kenya, increasing access to clinical services and essential products while giving underserved communities a chance to reinvest earnings in their health.
