Recently, Pfizer colleagues from around the world came together as a Global Health Team in Mumbai, India, to volunteer with Doctors for You (DFY), an India-based medical humanitarian non-profit organization whose mission is to provide sustainable, equitable, effective and efficient health care services to the most vulnerable individuals and communities in India. DFY was founded in 2007 by a group of physicians and medical students, and while the organization was built on strong medical expertise, it was looking to attain business acumen to grow its services.
To help build this capability, the Global Health Team worked closely with DFY to develop a strategic plan aimed at optimizing operational efficiency to enable organizational growth. The team provided strategic counsel and skills training to develop business plans, streamline internal processes and communicate the organization’s vision.
“At Pfizer, we see global health challenges in a different way than those who experience them on a day-to-day basis, so it’s important not to jump to conclusions,” said Global Health Team member Bernard. “There is so much value in understanding the why. While our cultures are coming closer together, there are many differences, and we need to try to understand them. The conversations we had with Doctors for You were as valuable as the project deliverables themselves.”
Together, the Global Health Team and DFY approached every task with active listening, skills-sharing and suspended judgment, and by the end of their deployment, the team was extremely satisfied with the engagement and high level of professionalism of the entire project. “I am stunned at how much we accomplished in a three-week period,” said Global Health Team member Jade. “It was an incredibly humbling experience.”
The group is confident that their work will support growth for DFY’s infrastructure and visibility within the global health community.
