OUR PRINCIPLES OF ENGAGEMENT
At Pfizer, we never settle for inferring patient priorities. Instead, we strive to enhance the patient, care partner and family experience by developing a deep understanding of the true spectrum of patient realities so that we can make the most meaningful differences in their lives. This deep understanding can only be achieved by working in collaboration with the patient community. As a company, we believe patient engagement is a principle that is core to achieving our purpose. In practice, it’s the method in which the patient community and Pfizer collaborate on medicine research and development to create higher-quality work, potentially leading to better decisions and health outcomes.
We have boundless appreciation for what patient insights can provide. We actively listen to patients’ perspectives in order to gain an improved understanding of symptoms, disease and risk. It is our goal to involve patients from discovery to delivery and beyond because we believe patient-centered research and development optimizes our ability to meet patient needs more effectively.
CONTINUOUSLY ENGAGING PATIENTS
At Pfizer we believe that it’s critically important to engage patients directly when trying to gain an understanding of what matters to them most. What better resource exists than patients themselves when attempting to maximize the potential of our healthcare innovations? However, this collaborative approach isn’t only about yielding results that help create breakthrough medicines, but about empowering patients so they can better understand how to properly manage their health over time.
OUR ENGAGEMENT PROCESS
Patient engagement starts with our core principles: gaining patient insights, collaborating with the patient, and activating and enabling the patient.
Gaining patient insights starts with understanding what patients need and want. Through listening to, observing and engaging patients, we are able to develop an in-depth understanding of their experience, needs and priorities. We then collate knowledge and user experience to build the foundation in developing solutions that are truly addressing patient needs.
Collaborating with the patient starts with asking ourselves how to integrate patient inputs into medicine development. It starts by being transparent in sharing information and involving patients directly into design thinking as we co-create innovative solutions that focus on evolving patient needs. We then integrate patient input to build, revise and finalize patient-focused solutions.
Patient activation and enablement begins by understanding how we can better support the patient community and lower barriers to enable participation. We offer support to patients groups that are focused on a disease or product, including working with them to improve access to medicines.
PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT (PCOA)
Pfizer’s PCOA team’s mission is to engage patients during the clinical research and development process in order to understand the treatment outcomes that matter most to patients and their caregivers. To carry out this mission, the PCOA team adapts existing measures, or identifies new ones, to capture those outcomes with the goal of providing value to all stakeholders.
This mission is complex, because it requires demonstrating to regulators that the measures are appropriate, properly incorporated into Pfizer trials, andinterpretable and that they represent something meaningful at both individual and group levels.
Patient needs, wants and priorities evolve along with advancements in medical technology. To this end, the PCOA team measures what matters most to patients to enable them and their healthcare providers to make more informed point-of-care decisions. Pfizer wants to make sure that information on outcomes important to patients can help facilitate that shared decision making.
Pfizer has recently released global guidelines to help ensure that all of our interactions with patients and patient organizations are appropriate, coordinated, focused on areas of mutual interest and executed in a manner consistent with applicable laws and regulations.

ReAl Talk Summit
Pfizer Inflammation & Immunology engaged in candid conversations with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) opinion leaders about how to handle pharmaceutical industry misconceptions, the power of a positive mindset and how Pfizer can continue to partner with the RA community. The goal was to share and solicit feedback on how Pfizer can best meet the needs of the patient community.
Pneumococcal Pneumonia: All About Your Boom
Adults 65 and older have a greater risk of being hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia. Pfizer teamed up with legendary singer and Baby Boomer Patti LaBelle to encourage adults 65 and older to better understand the risks of pneumococcal pneumonia and the role of vaccination in helping to keep them healthy.
Protecting Our Heroes
Sponsored by Pfizer, this video shows the strength and connection grandparents have with family members and stresses the importance of protecting them from preventable diseases like pneumococcal pneumonia. The video emphasizes how necessary it is to encourage family members over 65 to get vaccinated.
Meningococcal Group B Disease (Meningitis B): Stand In-B-Tween
Many parents don’t know that two separate vaccines are needed to help fully protect their adolescent and young adult children from Meningitis B. To raise awareness, Pfizer partnered with families impacted by the disease and created a video to share their stories on social media.
Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) Educational Foundation
Pfizer Consumer Healthcare supports CHPA’s effort to educate consumers about the safe use of over-the-counter medicines through efforts such as KnowYourDose.Org to help consumers use medicines safely; Up and Away and Out of Sight, an educational program to remind families of the importance of safe medicine storage to prevent young children from getting into medicine when they shouldn’t; and Treat with Care, a program that provides parents and caregivers the information they need to safely treat their children’s cough and cold symptoms with pediatric OTC cough and cold medicines.
International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics World Congress
Pfizer Consumer Healthcare sponsored a program entitled, “Self-Care Technology for the Aging Population: Why We Need to Invest in Health Tech for the 60+ Consumer,” to examine how rising healthcare costs and a rapidly aging population is expanding the market opportunity for self-service healthcare technologies.
Breast Cancer: A Story Half Told
Pfizer, in partnership with advocates, patients and healthcare professionals aims to elevate public understanding of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and expand the breast cancer conversation to be more inclusive of MBC. Through this initiative, Pfizer commissioned well-known photographers to document the realities and daily lives of MBC patients.
Through My Eyes – Asia
“Through My Eyes” is a Pfizer Emerging Markets Asia initiative to raise the awareness and understanding of advanced breast cancer told through the eyes of women living with advanced breast cancer in Asia Pacific. Sixteen women, two dedicated husbands and two healthcare professionals from eight different countries, share their stories.
Cada Minuto Cuenta (Every Minute Counts) – Latin America (LATAM)
Cada Minuto Cuenta is a patient resource co-created by Pfizer Oncology, Latin American Oncologists and Patient Advocacy groups, to provide patients with the support, advice and help they need to manage their diagnosis, treatment, emotions, relationships, health and work.
Hemophilia Homecare – Middle East
Hemophilia Homecare is an initiative providing clinical care and dosing and administration training for homebound people with hemophilia taking prophylaxis. Pfizer worked in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health to establish the effort.
Hemo Heroes – Middle East
In October, Pfizer Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) launched the “HemoHeroes” app in Qatar in partnership with the Friends of Hemophilia Society. The app will launch across the Middle East in early 2018 and is designed to encourage young patients with hemophilia to be more aware of their condition and how it can be managed.
Developed in collaboration with Pfizer, the Sickle Cell Disease community leaders and medical experts, this collaborative digital platform provides a resource-filled learning experience designed to increase knowledge, emotional support and empowerment for people living with sickle cell disease.
Miles for Hemophilia: Your Personal Best
In collaboration with Pfizer and Hemophilia patient organizations around the world, the Miles for Hemophilia: Your Personal Best campaign encourages the global Hemophilia community to challenge themselves to achieve their Personal Best in any activity that keeps them moving.
Smoking Cessation Support
Pfizer offers several initiatives to support individuals on their quit-smoking journey. In the U.S., Pfizer partnered with the American Lung Association to create “Quitter’s Circle.” In Europe, Pfizer’s “Kick it with Help” campaign partnered with athletes and online influencers to emphasize the role that support can play in quitting smoking.
What is Pfizer RxPathways?
Access to medicines is a cornerstone of Pfizer's commitment to healthcare. For more than 25 years, Pfizer has offered an array of prescription assistance programs to help eligible patients get access to their Pfizer medicines. Today, this assistance is provided through Pfizer RxPathways™, formerly Pfizer Helpful Answers®, which helps eligible patients get access to their Pfizer medicines by offering a range of support services, including insurance counseling, co-pay help, providing Pfizer medicines for free or at a savings, and more.
Transforming Access to Contraception Options in Developing Countries
We have robust efforts underway, through a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and a consortium of organizations from both the private and public sectors, to help broaden access to contraception options for women living in some of the world’s poorest countries.
Improving Access to Cancer Care in Sub-Saharan Africa
In June 2017, Pfizer announced a collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to provide access to critical cancer treatments, such as chemotherapies, in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Under the groundbreaking agreement, Pfizer will offer affordable access to eleven, high-quality cancer treatments through Government tenders and procurement mechanisms.
Aiding Cardiovascular Disease Efforts in Asia
In April 2017, we launched Healthy Communities, a collaboration with the international, nonprofit organization Population Services International. This $1 million collaboration will improve the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, a condition that can often lead to stroke and impacts one-quarter of all adults in Myanmar and Vietnam, as a leading cause of mortality. Through January 2018, the program has trained 485 providers, screened more than 313,000 patients, diagnosed 54,000 patients and treated more than 40,000 patients.
