Pfizer La Jolla's 25-acre campus includes five buildings totaling more than 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities, with specialized laboratories and equipment for structural and computational biology, molecular design, drug metabolism, high throughput chemistry, and pharmacology.

The scientists based in La Jolla focus on two areas of research and development: discovering and developing new medicines to treat many forms of cancer; and, discovering novel prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines for the prevention and treatment of significant human maladies (in the areas of cancer and central nervous system diseases).

Pfizer La Jolla scientists are proud to have played a significant role in the discovery, development or both, of a number of cancer therapies, including Sutent® (sunitinib), Xalkori® (crizotinib), Inlyta® (axitinib), Bosulif® (bosutinib)‎ and Ibrance® (palbociclib).

The Pfizer La Jolla campus is an important part of California's life sciences community and partners with academic institutions and other research organizations to advance scientific understanding and deliver new medicines. In 2011, Pfizer announced that it is partnering with the University of California, San Diego Health Sciences and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute through the company's Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI). CTI is a network of collaborative partnerships with top-tier life science research institutions in California, Massachusetts and New York that aims to accelerate and transform drug discovery and development. In San Diego, CTI's home base is located on the Pfizer La Jolla campus.

The campus is on a mesa less than one mile from the Pacific Ocean and mirrors the vibrancy found in the San Diego area, which is home to one of the largest concentrations of academic and biotechnology institutions in the world. Within a 10-mile radius of the La Jolla campus are major educational and research facilities such as the University of California at San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.
